Hello! …Have We Met?

Dear Reader! So glad you’re here to learn about our album ‘Kentucky’. I wanted to take a little time to explain a little more in depth about the album and talk about who we are and why we made this. Frozen Treats is a band started by Andy Robinson (who is me) back in 2018 in an effort to explore musical ideas with serious personal themes, whereas Super Rad was the band that I (Andy) started in 2015 with my best friend Jacob Marshall to make comedy music videos like this one.

We had been talking about potential music ideas and I brought up the fact that Sufjan Stevens’ never actually did make an album about Kentucky (where he “promised” to do an album for every state). I thought to myself, “Well, if he’s not gonna do it, then we should!” So we started off on an epic journey writing as much material as we could think of about KY (we had to scrap a lot because you could write several albums about our state, it ended up around 1 hour 12 minutes). I wrote quite a few songs by myself, and given that the album had both a serious/personal side as well as a comedic side, it only made sense that the release of the album was naturally a collaboration between Frozen Treats and Super Rad!

Now the album is finally out with a music video for “River”! We are incredibly excited to share our music with the world, but more importantly the good people of Kentucky. More info below, and links galore!

The Music

What Can You Expect From ‘Kentucky’?

The music in Kentucky is very much influenced by all of me and Jacob’s favorite artists. Obviously the initial influence came from Sufjan Stevens and his work on the ‘Michigan’ and ‘Illinois’ albums. However, we did not wish to copy his style whole cloth. We are influenced by the masters such as The Beatles, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Roger Miller, John Denver, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (in some very specific parts), and the list goes on. We tried to blend a tender folky acoustic style with an alternative rock style, as well as bringing more and more instrumentation into some of the songs to really make them shine. For the first time, we utilized some studio musicians to play strings which really bring the songs to life. You’ll note the beginning of ‘Day at the Derby’ starts simply with an acoustic guitar and bugle, whereas the end of the song reveals a distorted electric guitar solo that brings the hype and energy that you expect from such an event as the derby. Similarly, many of the songs play with dynamics, often starting quiet and then bringing other instruments to a crescendo. The album runs at around 1 hour 12 minutes, which (in our humble opinions) never drags and maintains an air of respect and playfulness and love for songwriting as well as a love for Kentucky.

The Players

Andy & Jacob

Here we are! We are here! Jacob and I met in high school, and in 2013 began making short films for Youtube which eventually evolved into making comedy sketches ala Key & Peele or WKUK. We eventually started making comedy music and chose the name Super Rad after one of our favorite Aquabats songs. In the meantime, I was messing around with personal music and eventually started releasing it under the name Frozen Treats. Fast forward a few albums later, and now we’re finally making serious music and comedy music as one unit! Hopefully people have as much fun listening to the album as we did making it.

The album was written by someone who spent their whole life in a small rural town in Kentucky, as well as someone that spent a large portion of their life in major cities. It’s a view from two sides of the same coin. Lyrically, the songs are about different aspects of Kentucky and the culture. However, there are internal feelings sprinkled within the songs, which I believe serve as an introspective view into how life here has shaped us as human beings.

Finishing the album was a huge relief. Not only because it was a massive endeavor, but also because I knew that I’d finally be able to share it with people. It’s deep, it’s fun, it’s weird. It’s us, in all of our silly and serious glory. My only hope is that when people listen to it, they can sense it like a nod from an old friend. Parts unspoken, but beautiful.
— Andy
